A beer for an old friend

Not every beer starts with a recipe. Some start with a story.

Paul came into our lives with his brother Diego when they were puppies. Nobody wanted them, and we saved them from a certain fate. Since then they have been part of the FORASTERA family.

Paul was the amber puppy. He had exactly that warm colour you see in this beer. Diego, his brother, was black. That is why Paul gave his name to our Amber Ale, while Diego sometimes appears in dark special beers like La Lágrima Negra.

Today Paul is an old gentleman. This beer is our way of honouring him: a calm, noble Amber Ale with body, memory and that toffee touch that makes the next sip arrive almost by itself.

Toffee, toasted malt and León nobility

What we love in a good Amber Ale is the way toffee notes appear without turning the beer sweet or heavy.

The malt carries the main voice, but not alone. Classic hops from León bring noble, clean bitterness that closes the sip and keeps the beer balanced.

And then there is the water. Brewed in Alaró, inside the Serra de Tramuntana, it is part of the body, origin and character of this beer.

Frequently asked questions about Paul Amber Ale

What is an Amber Ale?

An Amber Ale is a top-fermented beer that lives strongly from malt. It is usually amber in colour, with notes of toasted bread, biscuit, soft caramel or toffee.

What is the difference between an Amber Ale and a Pale Ale?

A Pale Ale usually looks more towards hops: aroma, freshness and a lighter profile. An Amber Ale leans more on special malts, deeper colour and flavours of toasted bread, biscuit, caramel or toffee.

Why does Paul Amber Ale have toffee notes?

The toffee notes come mainly from amber malts and the compounds created during the roasting of the grain. Used well, those malts bring depth and roundness without making the beer sweet and heavy.

Why do we use hops from León in this Amber Ale?

Because they bring noble, clean and elegant bitterness. In an Amber Ale, hops should support the malt, not cover it.

Why is it called Paul Amber Ale?

Paul and his brother Diego came into our lives as puppies when nobody wanted them. Paul had exactly that warm amber colour as a puppy. This Amber Ale is our way to thank him for all these years of company.

Who is Diego and what is La Lágrima Negra?

Diego is Paul’s brother. While Paul was amber, Diego was black. From time to time a special dark beer called La Lágrima Negra appears on our taps as a reference to Diego.

Does darker beer always mean more alcohol?

No. Beer colour comes mainly from malt, not alcohol. Paul Amber Ale has 4.8% ABV and can be malty and toffee-like without being strong or heavy.
